Why Luma Doesn't Require Specific Email Types

Understanding Luma's approach to email requirements for event registration

When creating events on Luma, you might notice that you cannot require guests to use a specific type of email address (like work emails) for registration. This is an intentional design decision that benefits both hosts and guests.

One Account for All Your Events

People typically use a single Luma account throughout their lives, even as they move between different companies, attend personal events, and engage with various communities. A single Luma account might have:

  • Personal email addresses
  • Work email addresses from current and past employers
  • School or university email addresses
  • Other email addresses they use

This approach keeps things simple and organized for everyone.

For Hosts: One Account, Multiple Calendars

We recommend that hosts also use a single Luma account, even when organizing events for different companies or organizations. Instead of creating multiple accounts, you can:

  • Create separate calendars for each company or organization you work with
  • Manage permissions at the calendar level to control who can create and edit events
  • Keep your event history in one place as you move between roles

This way, you can seamlessly transition between hosting personal events, company events, and community events without the hassle of switching accounts.

Better Registration Experience

Allowing guests to register with their existing Luma account creates a smoother experience:

  • Higher registration rates — Guests are much more likely to register when they can use the account they're already signed in with
  • No confusion — Guests don't need to remember which email they used for which event
  • Faster checkout — No need to create new accounts or remember multiple passwords
  • Better attendance — When guests use their primary account, they're more likely to receive and see event reminders

Avoiding Account Fragmentation

If Luma allowed hosts to require specific email types, guests would need to create and manage multiple Luma accounts. This would lead to:

  • Confusion about which account to use for which event
  • Missed event updates and reminders sent to rarely-checked accounts
  • Difficulty managing registrations across different accounts
  • Lost registrations when people forget which email they used

Alternative Solutions

If you need to verify that attendees are from a specific organization:

  • Use unlock codes to restrict access to your event
  • Add a registration question asking for company or affiliation
  • Use the approval feature to manually review registrations
  • Create private events and share the link only with your intended audience

Collecting Additional Information

While you cannot require specific email types, you can still collect the information you need:

  • Add custom registration questions to gather work emails, company names, or other details
  • Use the Company question type to collect workplace information
  • Enable splitting first and last names (Luma Plus feature) to ensure you get complete names

By keeping email requirements flexible, Luma ensures that both hosts and guests have the best possible event experience.
